A shock absorbing device is known in the prior art for mounting to the forward part of a vehicle seat, especially the seat back of a vehicle seat. This known shock absorbing device includes a gas spring which has a piston and chamber. The shock absorbing device also includes a resilient element which has a variable area which is movable in the longitudinal direction of the gas spring. The resilient element is formed by an elastic sheet, such as an elastomeric material sheet. With the known shock absorbing device, the resilient element may also have a cylindrical configuration. In particular, a shock absorbing device of this type may be mounted to the forward part of a vehicle seat, especially the seat back. A shock absorbing device which can be mounted to the seat back of the vehicle seat is known from DE 696 13 067 T2.
